Review: Both my mother and wife are high school teachers, so I know second-hand how terrible bullying is these days in high schools; worse than ever, some argue, with the added "weapons" of social media and cell phones to amp up the magnitude of the bullying. So as shocking as author Paige VanZant's personalized account is of her horrific bullying/gang rape in high school, I unequivocally believe every word she heart-wrenchingly conveys in her book "RISE."The book is told in the first person, Paige's voice, her account of her life from an adolescent "tomboy" till about age 22 or 23. It's written in an easy-to-read style (free of profanity or anything exploitative); so it's suitable for anyone as young as 13 on up to read. The first 60% or so of the book is the most compelling, as Paige reveals the horrific abuse she suffered from her "friends," fellow cheerleaders, and a group of vile despicable boys led by "Ivan." Paige's horrifying high school freshman year, including her being gang-raped by these monstrous boys, is truly mind-numbing and beyond moving. You feel for her so much and so desperately root for her to somehow survive.She eventually does, by her family fortuitously moving out of state before her sophom*ore year, but the demons of her year-long abuse follow her. Her "new life" is a struggle with the demons she now carries--her soul and mind crushed by the abuse she suffered. New demons arise as she meets and falls for an abusive guy, who becomes her boyfriend. Another abuser she suffers from. Throughout the telling of this period of her life, you again intently root for her to survive and somehow "rise" from the depths of despair the world has thrown at her. After much pain and suffering (including a suicide attempt), she eventually finds a gym (The Lion's Den) that specializes in MMA (mixed martial arts) to channel her suffering into, a place of solace, a place to "exercise" her internal pain/demons.The last 40% or so of the book is devoted to her (somewhat) rapid rise in the competitive world of MMA. Paige is full or grit, strength and determination, much of it natural, but much of it derived from the hell she suffered through, too. She devotes herself to MMA and becomes a young standout, a rising star, which leads to fame in MMA (and an incredibly successful run on the reality TV show "Dancing with the Stars"). It's great to see Paige overcome her horrific abuse and RISE above it to find great success in life. But this last half section of the book is less interesting than the first half, to be honest, as Paige seems to have few obstacles, and much of this half is glossed over, and is fairly drama-free.That said, Paige's young life, and what she overcame, if truly inspirational, and I was emotionally moved by so many of the very personal events/experiences/traumas that she courageously conveys/reveals. She's obviously an extremely brave person, and deserves every moment of happiness and success she gets. It's truly wonderful to know she achieved so much more success, fame and wealth than any of the horrible "kids" who abused her when she was just a 14-year-old high school freshman. Good for you Paige, you did it, you beat them all.I would say this is a must-read for anyone who has suffered bullying (or rape) or who is currently a victim of bullying. You are not alone. Paige is a testament to that. There is light at the end of every dark tunnel, and Paige's experiences are a powerful and uplifting life-lesson in getting back to that light and out of the dark.

Review: I awoke a few minutes after midnight this morning and couldn't get back to sleep. Getting up, I powered up my Kindle and this book immediately downloaded. I must confess that I forgot that I had pre-ordered it, but was pleased to see it. I began reading and found it so enthralling that I read it in one sitting, and I'm not an MMA fan by any means. I am intrigued by bios of individuals who have succeeded despite the odds. Well done, Paige!

Review: Told in stark plain language, Rise is a powerful tale about confronting powerlessness to stand in your own truth. It’s a tale about the destruction of childhood innocence through gang rape, slu*t-shaming and uncontrolled school bullying. It addresses PTSD and recovery. What it isn’t is a casual stroll through positive memories. It promotes insight into suicidal and homicidal ideation, and insight into the erroneous choice of a controlling and violent partner out of a warped impression that the relationship offered protection and safety from a hostile environment.

Review: For most people this book may not carry as much weight, but those who have family members that have been through trauma this book is eye opening. Both my wife and adopted son have experienced heavy trauma like this. It helps me to understand what they might feel and also know how to help them. My son now is one heck of a challenge, but it’s good to see that there is more on the other of this if we can us get him through.Paige keep fighting. I’ll see you on the other side of glory. Review: Honestly, I am a big fan of the UFC and of Paige VanZant which is what originally drew me into reading this book. However, you do not need to be into UFC to love this book. This is a story about a girls tough life and all she had to go through to get to where she is. Incredibly inspiring. Amazing read, I literally could not put it down. There are some tough parts in this book that make my heart literally break for her. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I never really review things but I felt like this certainly deserved a 5 star write up. It caught me from the very first sentence to the very last sentence. Amazing book and I will recommend it to everyone for sure.

Review: This book is pretty good and I finished it within 2 days. I too agree with others it does seem like she has more to tell but held back or tried to end the book quickly. The book is mostly about her life when she was 14 and the trauma and bullying she endured. I am not a MMA fan so any hardcore fan may not like it since it doesn't really touch much on her MMA career.

Review: This book was really powerful and I applaud her for having the courage to tell her story. It is irrelevant what you think of her as an MMA fighter because this book is about more than that. It's about rising from the ashes and pursuing something you love to better yourself. Definitely recommend it to anyone who is struggling.
